A Greenwood Avenue couple were frightened when an apparently disgruntled and intoxicated sports fan broke into their home early Wesnesday morning. They hid from him until police came after he threatened to kill them, using profanity, according to incident reports.
Statesboro Police Capt. L. C. Williams said officers responded to the couple's call for help around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, and found William Benjamin Smith, 21, also of a Greenwood Avenue address, "inside the residence in the kitchen in an apparent intoxicated state."
According to police incident reports, Smith was yelling and said "Barry Bonds doesn't deserve to be the Home Run King."
Bonds is a well-known baseball player involved in a controversy concerning steroid use.
The victims, who emerged from their hiding place once police arrived, did not know Smith, although he lives nearby, Williams said.
Smith was taken into custody on burglary charges, as he forced his way into the victims' home and shattered a glass door, he said.
The victims were not injured in the incident, he said.
Smith was taken to the Bulloch County Jail and released later that day on a $2,000 bond, according to jail records.
