A Statesboro Police officer suffered a fractured wrist and other injuries early Sunday morning after another man, charged with DUI, struck his patrol car.
Officer Thomas Oliver McMillan, 55, was responding to a call around 1:50 a.m. Sunday, driving on Foss Street, when the accident occurred, said Statesboro Police Chief Stan York.
Georgia State Patrol Senior Trooper T. Strickland, who responded to the crash, said in reports Bobby Williams Jr., 39, Anthony Street, was driving south on Baldwin Street and tried making a turn onto Foss Street when he struck a curb on Donnie Simmons Way.
Williams' blue 1988 Ford Expedition traveled about 200 feet into the west ditch on Foss Street before returning to the roadway and crashing into McMillan's patrol car, he said.
After the impact, William's Expedition overturned and struck a street sign before coming to a rest right side up, Strickland said in reports. McMillan's patrol car spun and traveled about 12 feet before ending up facing westbound in the north lane of Foss Street, he said.
Both McMillan and Williams suffered visible injuries and were transported to East Georgia Regional Medical Center for treatment by Bulloch County EMS, he said.
Williams refused to submit to alcohol tests at the scene, and was charged with DUI (refused test), failure to maintain lane, driving on the wrong side of the roadway and seat belt violation, Strickland said.
Georgia State Patrol troopers responded to the crash because a Statesboro Police vehicle was involved, York said. Whenever a traffic accident involves a city or county law enforcement vehicle, state troopers respond to investigate regardless of jurisdiction.
