Local horseback riders are invited to mount up against cancer Saturday, March 28 for a trail ride for the Candler County’s Relay for Life Team Yosemite Sam.
The ride will be held at Clark Farms in Portal and will raise money to fund cancer research for a cure, said event coordinator Kellie Boyette.
Gerald Smith, a Nashville songwriter from Statesboro, will be featured entertainment along with local groups, p providing music and fun after the ride. A chicken dinner will be held as well, she said.
The ride begins at 9 a.m., ending at noon, when lunch will be served. The remainder of the evening includes hay rides, wagon rides, a petting zoo, music and more, she said.
Chicken plates will be $7, and the ride donation is $10 per rider. All horses must have proof of a negative Coggins test, and riders must provide their own horses.
Smith, whose father Shorty Smith knew local fame as lead singer for “ Shorty Smith and the Peapickers,” has lived in Nashville for the past 22 years. He started out with brief fame for his song “ Georgia Quackerjack” and wrote “ What Part of No Don’t You Understand” for Lorrie Morgan, “Every Second” for Collin Raye, and other songs for country stars including George Jones and George Strait.
Other entertainment will be provided by the following: Do Good DJ’s, The Sliver Liners, Tom Obsborne, Southeast Cowboys For Christ chaplain, and The Friendship Pickers.
Southeast Cowboys For Christ is co-sponsoring the event.
Boyette suggested people bring lawn chairs for the event and encouraged non-riders to attend the event as well. There will also be wagon rides, hay rides, a silent auction, and cotton candy available.
Clark Farm is five miles west of Portal off U. S. 80 West — drivers will turn left onto Clark Farm Road and travel about a mile to the farm.
Those coming from Metter will turn left onto Hendricks Road off Portal-Metter Highway just before reaching the Bulloch/Candler line. Take the next right and follow the road until reaching Clark Farm.
