Bulloch County Board of Education members are slated to discuss and possibly approve the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school calendars Thursday during an organizational meeting held at 6:30 p.m. in the William James Educational Complex on Williams Road.
The calendars, modeled after calendars that have been used over the past few years, offer a shorter summer break and several smaller breaks intermingled throughout the year, with usually a month to six weeks between each break or holiday.
While in the past some parents and teachers have complained about the calendars for a variety of reasons, including too many breaks throughout the year and summer break being too short, there haven't been as many complaints this year, said Bulloch BOE chairman David Ball.
"We've had very few complaints," he said Tuesday. "But if you ask 9,000 people about what is the best calendar, you will get 9,000 different answers."
He said he approves of the calendar. "I like it. It keeps more kids on task and a lot of kids would take a whole week off during the holidays anyway."
Ball referred to previous calendars that only allowed for a couple days' vacation around holidays, but now the calendar gives students (and teachers) the whole week around a holiday off from school.
School officials noticed parents would plan holiday events and end up keeping the students out the whole week anyway, which affected attendance, he said.
Ball said having a 10-week summer break instead of a 15-week summer break is beneficial in that "kids can retain knowledge learned" better.
"It seems to work in other (school) systems," he said. "Most parents do like it. Some teachers don't like it. They want a longer summer, but it's easier to have a 10-week break than a 15-week break.'
Bulloch County BOE member Mike Herndon also approved of the calendar.
"It's a really good calendar," he said. "Some parents have complained, about too many breaks, but some like them."
Changing the calendar in an attempt to satisfy everyone would backfire in the end, and in the end, changes would be minor anyway, he said.
"You can pull and tug on it, but at the end ... you may have changed it by a week," he said. "We'll work it out. For the most part it's a good calendar, one we've had for the past several years."
