Fighting for a cure

On Saturday, Oct. 27, the Statesboro Fire Department sponsored the 2012 Firefighter Challenge at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fairgrounds. The day of food, fun and family was a local fund-raising effort to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, a voluntary health agency dedicated to finding treatments and cures for 43 neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive medical and community services and far-reaching professional and public health education.

Cultural exchange

On Tuesday, Aug. 28, Georgia Southern University welcomed a delegation of Korean students from Keimyung University in Daegu, South Korea, to campus as part of the collaborative exchange program the two schools have enjoyed since 2001.

2012 Brooklet Peanut Festival

The grounds were littered with peanut shells as people enjoyed the treat for which the Brooklet Peanut Festival is known; boiled peanuts. Vendors offered hot, fresh and salty boiled peanuts as well as roasted and even fried peanuts at the festival's 23rd annual celebration on Saturday, Aug 18. Throughout the day, crowds also enjoyed watching free live entertainment, vendors and games. The festival ended with a street dance Saturday night featuring Randy "Hat Man" Smith and the Magic Rocks Band.
