Burke, Li receive academic honor

Dr. Marty Waters, principal of Statesboro High School, announced this week that Madeline Burke and Jeffrey Li have been named Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.

The Southeast Bulloch Middle School Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Chapter is hosting its fourth annual telephone book recycling drive through November 11. Held in partnership with Keep Bulloch Beautiful, last year the students collected 3,451 old telephone books, keeping them out of local landfills and allowing tons of paper to be recycled.

Mill Creek Elementary remembers Guernsey

More than 75 friends, family and co-workers gathered September 29 at Mill Creek Elementary School for a memorial tree planting service to remember the school's former nurse, Mary Ann Guernsey. Guernsey served MCES for 11 years, and she passed away March 30, 2011, from cancer. Nurses with Bulloch County Schools and Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE), from the Statesboro Regional Sexual Assault Center (SRSAC), donated the 8-foot Crape Myrtle Tree and the accompanying monument in her memory.
