Tough weekend ahead for SoCon teams

Georgia Southern isn't the only team in the Southern Conference opening the season Saturday against a top-tier team. Two other teams from the SoCon will join GSU in the effort to upset the perennial powerhouses of the BCS this weekend. Chattanooga travels to Oklahoma on Saturday while Appalachian State will take on LSU in Baton Rouge, La.

The Blue Shirt Boys

Things didn't quite come out the way the Georgia Southern defense had planned last year. In spite of a commendable 7-4 finish - especially considering the Eagles won just three games the year before - the defense still refers to the 2007 season as a "disappointment."

The Eagles yielded 404.6 yards per game last year, third worst in the Southern Conference. Since then, second-year coach Chris Hatcher has implemented a new defense that he hopes will show marked improvement from last season.

Eagle receivers looking to step up

The aftermath of the announcement that several members of Georgia Southern's football team will be suspended for the season opener has ignited a number of questions. But to coach Chris Hatcher, finding a worthy replacement for senior wide receiver Raja Andrews isn't chief among his concerns.

Andrews is one of eight Eagles' that will not play against Georgia in Athens on Aug. 30.

Eight Eagle football players suspended

Georgia Southern head football coach Chris Hatcher announced that five student-athletes are being suspended for the season-opener at Georgia and three student-athletes will miss the first two games of the 2008 season due to a violation of institutional rules.

No doubt it's been a rough road for the Chattanooga Mocs, who've only had one winning season in the last decade - a 6-5 mark in 2005. You have to go back even further to find the last time the Mocs had a winning record in Southern Conference play, a 4-3 finish in 1991.
