Even if you're just a casual sports fan, you may recall the incident during the 1996 baseball season when Baltimore's Roberto Alomar, enraged at the umpire's call of "strike three," intentionally spat in the ump's face! Few actions have caused more uproar in any sport. His five-game suspension was little more than a slap on the wrist in the assessment of many fans. But that was the least of it. The shunning of Alomar by many, and his own self-condemnation, made life a nightmare For months the feelings between him and the umpire remained sour.
There were three basic types of agricultural farm ownership in Bulloch County at the turn of the 20th century. First, of course, was private ownership of the land. Secondly, there were two types of tenancy arrangements: the first, where the landlord collected rent from the tenant; and the second, where the landlord collected a percentage of the crops.
Michel DesLoges was born approximately in 1645 in the village of Loches, France, and died about 1710 in Isle Of Wight County, Virginia. There is evidence of Michel being a member of one of the French Huguenot Protestant churches in London prior to his leaving for America. He was listed as Michaell Deloge on the passenger list from Bristol, England, when he sailed for America. He arrived as an apprenticed tailor to Charles Taplady in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, on Aug. 24, 1663. It is said Deloge received a grant of 50 acres of land.
Throughout the last ten years of her life, my grandmother knitted hats for the newborn babies at her local hospital. What she didn't realize was that this small act of kindness, her form of volunteering, not only benefited those babies and their families but was likely to have improved her own health. That's right, volunteering not only benefits the community but it can benefit the mental, physical, and social well-being of volunteers.
Many outside maintenance activities slow down during this time of year due to cold weather. Take advantage of this slower period and devote some time to pruning those long neglected trees in your landscape.
Lila Blitch was born out in the wilds of the Western Territory, specifically somewhere near Phoenix, on September 1, 1900. Her parents (mother Marie Elise Edwards and father James Daniel Blitch) were members of the Statesboro First Baptist Church (FBC).
Unresolved guilt – in actuality or in the perception of the individual – has always been a tremendous problem, even - skeptics would likely say "especially" - for Christian people. One survey several years ago said that a majority of church members saw this as an issue in their spiritual life. I suspect this hasn't changed much since. Many times people - both religious and non-religious - feel guilt as a consequence of their actions, but fail or refuse to acknowledge it. And even when we do, they may have little understanding of how to deal with it.
During the annual celebration of Black History Month, it is important to recognize and reflect on the major contributions of African Americans to the health, well-being and safety of Americans and the greater global community.
February is Heart Month. A recent article in the "Journal of the American College of Cardiology" gives some very specific recommendations about how we can reduce risk for diseases of the heart and blood vessels.
I was reading about water bears the other day. They are microscopic creatures that look like tiny little bears with eight legs; their scientific name, tardigrada, means "slow mover." They can live for up to 50 years and at temperatures as low as -400 degrees Fahrenheit. If the water in which they live dries up, they go into a state of hibernation called cryptobiosis, "hidden life."
When the Bulloch County Commissioners were finally named by the Georgia Legislature, the list of men responsible for "fixing a proper place to erect a Court House and a jail" were Drury Jones, John Mikell, and Israel Bird. While Statesboro was not a den of thieves, it did have its moments when the law was desperately needed.
A month into the New Year and the middle of tax season is an appropriate time to evaluate our home office spaces to make tax preparation and bill paying as pleasant as possible. The first step in planning a home office is to determine what we need in an office space and study the space we have available for a home office set up.
In the joy and excitement of becoming followers of Jesus, new Christians may not understand the nature of their commitment to God. It is important that those who teach others the way of the Lord try to help them grasp the fact that they are beginning a journey that will involve temptation and even suffering. An informed faith, although perhaps inexperienced, involves more than the hasty promise to Jesus: "I will follow you wherever you go." (Compare Matthew 8:19) It requires an understanding of the self-sacrificing nature of Christianity, and a willingness to follow God when other concerns compete ...
Back in the early days, people in Bulloch County, and particularly in Statesboro, had some curious thoughts about the way things should run. Take the subject of animals, for instance, and most particularly, those roaming freely throughout the four corners of Main Street.
