Debunking a rumor: Moe’s is not closing

Every week, I have the pleasure of writing this column and talking about a passion of mine, local businesses and business development. While I try to have fun with it, I am forever conscious of the power of the words that are printed and distributed in the Statesboro Herald.

Starbucks to open store in front of Statesboro Mall

Starbucks is coming to the Statesboro Mall – not inside, but adjacent to the mall's main entrance. This will be the second Starbuck's location in Statesboro. The other is in the Russell Student Union on Georgia Southern University's campus.

Clash of jewelry chains comes to the Mall

The clash of the jewelry titans has come to Statesboro. With the opening this past Friday of Kay Jewelers in the Statesboro Mall, two of the three largest jewelry chains in the country now have stores here. The other titan is Friedman's Jewelers which also has a corner "slot" inside of the Mall.

Frontier CEO impresses with her expertise

Much has been made about our country's obsession with celebrity. Call me jaded, but unlike many of my fellow citizens, I really could care less about famous people for the most part. However, I have to be honest and admit that a year ago, the resume of someone I contacted for an interview caught my eye and frankly fascinated me.

I reported two weeks ago on the large number of single family residential housing building permits that had been issued by Bulloch County in January and February of this year. There were approximately 200 issued in the past two months with only 91 being issued in the county for the same period last year.

Jan Moore: Turning more competition into a good thing

For decades, boutique type ladies clothing stores have been an integral part of downtown Statesboro. The two that I remember being dragged into by my mother were Tillie's and Henry's.

Housing construction slump not hitting home

I was struck by the news released by the federal government this past Friday that housing construction has "plunged" to the lowest level in nearly a decade. The Associated Press reported that applications for new building permits fell in January for the 11th month out of the past 12, and that housing construction was down 11.8 percent in the South.

Opportunity comes knocking at Meinhardt

There is no better feeling than when a salesperson "calls" on you, and you end up selling their company your product or service. What makes it even better is if that salesperson is representing a company owned by the largest retailer in the world, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

Homebuilders open headquarters

I think by nature, productive human beings hope that when they depart this earth, a legacy of the good they accomplished will continue on. That legacy can be in the form of their children, businesses they have been a part of, organizations they have served, or any number of things.
