Georgia's Richt says OT Houston still ineligible

ATHENS, Ga. - Georgia offensive tackle Kolton Houston remains ineligible because he continues to test positive for an anabolic steroid he was given for shoulder surgery more than two years ago. If eligible, Houston would have been Georgia's No. 1 right tackle for Thursday's opening day of practice. Instead, coach Mark Richt said Georgia must prepare to be without the third-year sophomore. Richt said Georgia's medical staff hopes the banned substance, 19-norandrosterone, will eventually leave ...

UGA focused on winning SEC title

HOOVER, Ala. - The Georgia Bulldogs want to put the Southeastern Conference Eastern Division back atop the league. They see no reason why it can't happen this season, especially after a big group opted to return for their senior seasons instead of heading to the NFL. "We're still hungry," wide receiver Tavarres King said Thursday. "We did make it to the SEC championship (last season), but we didn't win it. That's something ...

ATHENS - Georgia tailback Isaiah Crowell was dismissed from the team Friday by head coach Mark Richt after the sophomore was arrested on felony weapons charges. Police found a gun in Crowell's vehicle early Friday morning. Georgia announced the dismissal Friday afternoon. Richt's short statement in the announcement did not mention Crowell. SEC Basketball Roundup: Kentucky outlasts LSU

NEW ORLEANS - John Calipari sounded like a coach trying to explain away a loss. No. 1 Kentucky wasn't just supposed to beat LSU, it was supposed to win comfortably. Instead, the Wildcats labored through an 18-turnover performance in which the feisty Tigers led early in the second half and never trailed by more than nine before Kentucky closed out a 60-51 victory Friday in the second round of the Southeastern Conference tournament. ...

SEC Basketball Roundup: LSU tops Arkansas in SEC tourney opener

NEW ORLEANS - Johnny O'Bryant picked an opportune time to get his sloppy ball-handling under control and transform back into the dominant inside force that LSU needs him to be. O'Bryant scored 18 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and added only two turnovers to his team-leading total for the season, and LSU pulled away in the second half for a 70-54 victory over Arkansas in the opening game of the Southeastern Conference Tournament on ...

It's tournament time

NEW ORLEANS - Three years into coach John Calipari's tenure at Kentucky, the Wildcats are once again the unquestioned kings of the Southeastern Conference. The No. 1-ranked Wildcats open this week's SEC tournament in New Orleans with a swagger reminiscent of the 1990s, when they won seven of eight tournament championships. They were so dominant the event was jokingly referred to as the Kentucky Invitational. "It's another time to get a championship," ...

Gamecocks take down Bulldogs

COLUMBIA, S.C. - Malik Cooke knew he had to make a play and Damontre Harris knew he had to get a block. Both followed through perfectly and South Carolina got the win it badly needed. Cooke scored 13 points, including the go-ahead basket with 19 seconds left and Harris blocked a layup attempt by Georgia's Gerald Robinson Jr. to save the Gamecocks' 57-56 victory Wednesday night - ending a five-game losing streak that ...

UGA tops Mississippi St.

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Kentavious Caldwell-Pope hadn't done this a million times. It just looked that way. The 6-foot-5 freshman guard juked to his left, stepped back and coolly knocked down Georgia's biggest shot of the season, a 3-pointer in overtime that lifted the Bulldogs to a 70-68 victory over No. 20 Mississippi State on Saturday. "That was a big-time shot that big-time players make," Georgia senior Gerald Robinson Jr. said. "I don't ...

ATHENS - The day started so well for Georgia. Top prospect Josh Harvey-Clemons revealed he was signing with the Bulldogs, turning a solid recruiting class into one that figured to be ranked among the nation's best. Then the drama began. As Wednesday dragged on, Georgia nervously waited for Harvey-Clemons to send in his signing papers, prompting speculation that his family wanted him to play elsewhere. Bulldogs have a star emerging

ATHENS, Ga. - With apologies to the FAA, Mark Fox remembers accepting the important call from Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in the summer of 2010. Fox was hoping Caldwell-Pope would become one of Georgia's biggest signees in 20 years. Fox's airplane was rolling down the runway when his cellphone rang. "I looked down at my phone and I thought 'I better answer this,' so I answered my phone," Fox recalled on Monday. ...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - John Jenkins scored 18 points and Jeffery Taylor added 16 as Vanderbilt held off Georgia, 77-66, on Saturday for the Commodores' seventh straight win and to remain undefeated in Southeastern Conference play. The Commodores (13-4, 3-0) didn't lead by more than six until Lance Goulbourne grabbed a rebound off Festus Ezeli's missed free throw and laid it back up for a 68-60 lead with 2:58 left.
