Is the Bible the word of God? Can we know for a certainty that "all scripture is breathed out by God" (2 Timothy 3:16, ESV), or given through God's "inspiration" (KJV)? Are the things we read in the Bible reliable insofar as being a trustworthy record of what God wants us to know of his nature, his activities and his will for his creation? Can we know the writers of these materials didn't just make them up and that they aren't just a bunch of largely unbelievable stories?
The calendars of 2012 are now rubbish, though hopefully the family memories of the past year will live on in the hearts of all. Three weeks ago today a madman shot to death 26 people inside Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., before killing himself. Twenty of the victims were 6- and 7-year-old children. Because of the age of the victims, it is, to me, the most horrific mass shooting of the 62 that have occurred in the United States since 1982.
This past week, the Wall Street Journal printed an article which contained a list of the fastest growing "micropolitan" communities in the country. A micropolitan is defined as a single county centered on a city with 10,000 to 50,000 residents. There are 576 in the U.S. with a combined population of 31 million.
It is eight o'clock on the morning after Christmas. One shelf of the refrigerator holds nothing but blue-lidded plastic tubs crammed with leftovers. The trash can by the back door is stuffed with paper and ribbon, cardboard and plastic, tin cans and Styrofoam.
