About 5 percent of Bulloch County's registered voters made it to the polls Tuesday, approving the extension of a Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) to 2014 that will fund the construction of three local elementary schools.

Bulloch County public school's "severe and profoundly" handicapped students are taught in a specially equipped classroom at the new Statesboro High School. The classroom is not hidden away in a separate building, but is located just off of the school commons area.

In a last-minute "best interest" plea, a woman facing a retrial of the 1998 murder of her husband pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
There is an election Tuesday. Or, more precisely, there is a referendum. Only one issue is on the ballot, but make no mistake, what Bulloch County voters elect to do will have as much direct impact on their lives as any vote they will cast for some time.

One victim, a 15-year-old, remains in critical condition after suffering multiple gunshot wounds. Friday, police charged Reginald Kentay Hagins, 18, Harvey Wilson Road, Portal, with participation in criminal street gang activity, aggravated battery and two counts of aggravated assault, said Capt. Scott Brunson.
