Southeast Bulloch Middle School sixth-grade math teacher Dr. Patia Rountree received one of the most prestigious awards in her field last week. Rountree was selected as the 2009 recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math Teaching for the state of Georgia.

A bomb killed a National Guard soldier from Portal Monday. A soldier from Columbus was also killed in the blast, which occurred near Kunduz, Afghanistan, military spokesmen said.

In a unanimous vote Tuesday, the Statesboro city council voted to continue with the employee furlough program through the first fiscal of quarter of 2010, which ends Sept. 30.
