Operation Medicine Drop

Over 35,000 pills, weighing almost 40 pounds, won't ever make it to contaminate ground water or cause a child to accidentally overdose, thanks to an effort by the Coalition for a Drug Free Bulloch County. Saturday, Nov. 13, citizens brought unused, unwanted or expired medicines to four local [pharmacies to be disposed of by incineration as part of "Operation Medicine Drop," an event that will hopefully be a regular service to the community.

Two arrested on multiple drug charges

After a month-long investigation, Statesboro Police Crime Suppression Unit agents arrested two men on marijuana charges, including sale of the drug near Statesboro High School.

Interim city manager gets raise

Statesboro City Council members voted Tuesday to extend interim city manager Frank Parker's contract by six months, as well as give him a raise. Councilman Travis Chance opposed the other council member's votes, stating he did not agree with spending more money when the original reason for hiring Parker was to save money.

Drive aims at 3,000-plus shoebox gifts

This week local people, centered on First Presbyterian Church, are gathering more than 3,000 shoeboxes packed with personal hygiene and small clothing items, school supplies and toys for boys and girls in countries hit by poverty, natural disasters or war.

Ogeechee Tech holds scholarship banquet

About 40 Ogeechee Technical College students enjoyed a banquet Monday in honor of their being awarded scholarships. Statesboro's Bruce Yawn offered a bit of humor and some sage advice as keynote speaker, telling students to pursue their dreams and never give up.

Early voting for runoff election begin today

Early voting for the Nov. 30 run off election to decide on Georgia's Supreme Court Justice and Court of Appeals judge begins today through Nov. 24, said Bulloch County Elections Supervisor Pat Lanier Jones. Voting maybe done between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Bulloch County Elections and Registrar's office in the Bulloch County Courthouse. No early voting will be held at the Honey Bowen Building for the run-off election.

Day of Great Thanksgiving set for Boro

Fourteen years ago, members of the Old Savannah City Mission organized the first Day of Great Thanksgiving in famed Forsyth Park. The 13th annual event to feed the needy of Savannah is set for next Saturday, but this year, the mission has joined forces with the faith community and others in Bulloch County and will hold the first Day of Great Thanksgiving in Statesboro.

At William James Middle School, there are three ladies who do more than run the front office: they serve as "William James Ambassadors" to the public each day. According to Principal Mike Yawn, without Lynn Brannen, Gwen Butler and Kim Nelson running the show, the front office would quickly come to a halt.
