Fall quarter begins with record numbers at OTC

Packed hallways, classrooms and long lines were common around the Ogeechee Technical College campus Tuesday, as the 2010 Fall Quarter started with a record number of students.

Like the Lone Ranger, Forest Ranger Doug Chassereau wears a white hat, but a lot of people can't see it. Leaders of the Portal Heritage Society said have seen it plainly and frequently because Society members say he has ridden to the rescue of the Catface Country Turpentine Festival so many times.

Time for Turpentine Festival

The Portal Heritage Society will be cooking turpentine this year at the 29th Annual Catface Country Turpentine Festival, thanks to a group who helped secure pine tar, an increasingly rare commodity that is essential in distilling turpentine. The tar was procured from a location in Mexico, said Portal Heritage Society member Jerry Lanigan.

Flu vaccine clinic is Friday

The Bulloch County Health Department will hold a flu vaccine clinic on Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Health department officials urged residents to come during the clinic hours to get vaccinated because extra staff will be on hand and the wait should be minimal. Flu vaccines cost $25.

SHS Class of 1948 reunion is Saturday

The 1948 graduating class of Statesboro High School will hold its 62nd annual class reunion at R.J.'s Steakery and Seafood on South Main Street in Statesboro beginning at 11 a.m on Saturday. Some 25 to 30 class members are expected to celebrate the occasion. The class graduated on May 31, 1948 under the leadership of S. H. Sherman, the superintendent, and Alvin L. McLendon the principal.

Fair parade hopes for no rain

Almost a year has passed since heavy rains washed out the Statesboro Kiwanis-Ogeechee Fair Parade in 2009, the first time in history the parade was canceled. So, plans are for the 2010 parade next month to be better than ever, said chairman Charles Sheets.
