Ga. Speaker of the House speaks in Statesboro

Last Wednesday, Georgia Speaker of the House Glenn Richardson was hosted by the Statesboro Chamber of Commerce to discuss the speaker's tax reform plan - GREAT. Standing for Georgia's Repeal of Every Ad valorem Tax, the speaker's plan calls for the elimination of all property taxes in favor of an expansion of the sales tax - without an increase in the sales tax rate.

Restaurant Inspections

The following are among the food service establishments inspected in October and November by the Bulloch County Health Department. The department scores on a 100-percentile scale. Kitchens are inspected at least every four months and are required to post their score sheets in public. The score and selected comments from health inspectors are included in each report. County to form own fire department

Bulloch County Commissioners voted Tuesday to end an agreement between the county and the City of Statesboro regarding fire services. The Statesboro Fire Department currently serves county residents living within a five-mile radius of the city limits, and Bulloch County currently funds 25 percent of the city fire department budget.

Free sneak preview of the Erk Russell Project

The Erk Russell Project is halfway completed and organizers are asking the public to view the progress so far. The project, a collaboration between the Department of Communication Arts at Georgia Southern University and the Averitt Center for the Arts, is based largely on oral histories collected from people who were acquaintances of the late coach. The effort will culminate in a stage production telling the story of Russell's immeasurable impact on Statesboro and the University – set to debut at the start of the 2008 football season.
