Nevils custodian keeps watchful eye on school

Nevils Elementary School has been under the watchful gaze of Joann Rawls for the past 22 years. Rawls was hired in 1987 as the second custodian for the school by then principal Charles Stokes, and became head custodian two years later.

Avatar tops box office for sixth-straight week

LOS ANGELES - James Cameron's "Avatar" is on a course to sink "Titanic" at the box office.

No. 1 for the sixth-straight weekend with $36 million, the 20th Century Fox sci-fi spectacle lifted its domestic total to $552.8 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. "Avatar" raised its worldwide total to $1.841 billion. That's $2 million shy of first place behind Cameron's last movie, the 1997 shipwreck epic "Titanic," at $1.843 billion.

JROTC at Southeast Bulloch earns honor

For the 19th consecutive year, the Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp (JROTC) cadets at Southeast Bulloch High School (SEB) earned the United States Army's highest national award, Honor Unit with Distinction (Gold Star Award). The U.S. Army gives the award to JROTC programs that maintain the highest standards in 10 major inspection areas.

Free food distribution Saturday helped about 500 families in Statesboro

About 100 volunteers came out on a cold morning to help bag 20,000 pounds of food donated by Bi-Lo, Kens IGA and Nash Finch to the Second Harvest Food Bank in Savannah and the Statesboro Food Bank.

More rain on the way

Everywhere you look, water is standing. Ditches overflow, pond banks are nonexistent, and some of Bulloch County's dirt roads are impassable. The El Nino weather pattern has made its presence known by the unusually excessive rainfall lately that has saturated the ground.
