Former Bulloch County sheriff Arnold Ray Akins is recovering from three recent surgeries and is ready to "go fishing," said his daughter, Juliana Akins Waits.

An oak tree split and fell on several vehicles in the parking lot behind Ag South on South Main Street Wednesday afternoon around 4 p.m. Despite the fact that one of the vehicles was occupied at the time, no one was injured in the incident.

The Variations will be sure to draw a large crowd for the street dance at the 20th Annual Brooklet Peanut Festival, but some may be too tired to tango after a day filled with activities. The festival is slated for Saturday, Aug. 15, from 7 a.m. until 10:30 p.m. in downtown Brooklet.
