A new mayor and two new Statesboro city council members took office Tuesday morning when they were sworn in before the Statesboro City Council meeting. The new members were honored with a breakfast reception before the business portion of the council meeting took place.

Portal man charged with rape

A Portal man was arrested Monday on charges he raped a teenager Christmas Day. The 14-year-old victim's father learned of the alleged rape Dec. 30 and called authorities, said Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson.

Deal: Mother kidnaps own 5-year-old daughter

A Statesboro woman is behind bars without bond, charged with kidnapping her own 5-year-old daughter. Kimberly Jane Kennedy, 27, Metts Lane, was apprehended in Screven County Saturday after an alert was issued for the 5-year-old, of whom her grandparents had legal custody, said Bulloch County Sheriff's Investigator Walter Deal.
