Sylvania Yarn Systems Inc. of Sylvania announced Wednesday that it will end all operations at its carpet yarn manufacturing plant by the end of the year. In a release the company cited the severe recession that the carpet industry has experienced for more than a year and the subsequent reduction in customer order volume at its plant.

The third annual Empty Bowls Project sale and chili luncheon was part of GSU's Hunger and Homelessness Week. GSU art students created and donated their hand-thrown bowls to the project. Thursday the bowls were brought to the Rotunda in front of the Russell Union and sold for $10 apiece. The bowls were filled with chili and all profits will benefit the Statesboro Food Bank.
