Fire destroys Portal family's home

A Portal family lost their home Thursday to a house fire possibly caused by a faulty surge protector. Portal Fire Chief Christopher Ivey said the fire originated in a child's bedroom and the surge protector is likely the cause. However, the investigation is ongoing, he said.

Police: Man arrested for at least 15 area burglaries

Statesboro Police arrested a man Tuesday they said is responsible for at least 15 burglaries in the area. Lamars Gavin, 33, Finch's Trailer Park, is behind bars, charged with 15 counts of burglary, theft by taking, and marijuana possession, aid Statesboro Police Capt. L. C. Williams.
