The Portal Panthers knew they would have a big gap to fill in 2007 when senior and leading scorer Fred Williams played his last game of the season in the 2006 GHSA state playoffs, but with some familiar faces and some new additions, PHS hopes it will not miss a beat.
Southeast Bulloch (0-1) kept it close for the first two quarters, but the Statesboro Blue Devils (1-0) outscored the Yellow Jackets 43-22 in the second half to open their season with a 64-38 home win Saturday night.
Take a deep breath, Eagle fans.
SYLVANIA – Junior running back Travis Coles reached 1,000 yards rushing for the second-straight season, Screven County evened the overall record against Southeast Bulloch at 12-12 and the Gamecocks earned the No. 3 seed in the GHSA Region 3-AA State Playoffs as they knocked off the rival Yellow Jackets 49-22 at Kelly Memorial Stadium Friday.
Portal and Jenkins County have both fought through difficult seasons in 2007, and tonight the Panthers host the Eagles to close out the season in a game that has both teams playing for pride.
Playoff implications aside, Screven County is looking at today's game against Southeast Bulloch for what it is - a rivalry.
BROOKLET – Four Metter turnovers and a missed extra point were the difference as the Tigers extended their losing streak to 22 and the Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets (2-7, 1-5 Region 3-AA) got their first region win of 2007 as SEB knocked off the visitors 14-13 on senior night at Fred Saver Field Friday.

PORTAL – The Portal Panthers (1-7, 1-3 Region 3-AA) celebrated homecoming in style as they amassed 399 yards of total offense and demolished the visiting Calvary Day Cavaliers (1-6, 1-3) 52-29 in front of an excited PHS crowd.
PORTAL - The winless Portal Panthers have had a tough go of it so far in 2007, but for PHS, quitting has not crossed its mind.
Coming off of a tough 35-0 road loss to Laney last Friday, the Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets (1-6, 0-4 Region 3-AA) continue to try and improve and look down the road to what lies ahead.

CLAXTON – The Portal Panthers (0-7, 0-3 Region 3-A) came out in a new look with Octavious Rawls and Steven Cox sharing time at quarterback and running a shotgun set to spread out the opposing defense, but it could not stop Claxton from getting its second-consecutive home victory as the Tigers topped PHS 21-7 Friday night.
