ArtsFest 2016

Saturday's 34th annual ArtsFest on Georgia Southern University's Sweetheart Circle - hosted for the first time by the Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department, with a lot of help from friends - continued many traditional attractions but also included some new twists. Art stops offered painting with brushes and fingers, clay and sand art activities and digital art for mobile devices.

Veterans Day 2015

In this year's Veterans Day ceremony, held Wednesday at the Averitt Center for the Arts, featured speaker Lonnie Ellis, post commander of the American Legion Dester Allen Post 90, delivered the keynote address and put special emphasis on the sacrifices made by veterans' families when their loved ones leave for duty and during their lives after service.

Kids go wild at the library

On Thursday, June 11, the Statesboro Regional Library welcomed Georgia Southern's Center for Wildlife Education for an hour of up-close-and-personal interaction between Statesboro kids and a few of the center's critters. Connor Merry of the wildlife center taught about the animals' behaviors and environments and helped dispel myths surrounding the creatures in his care.

Commencement 2015

In three different commencement ceremonies at Hanner Fieldhouse last Saturday, May 30, high school seniors from Portal High School, Southeast Bulloch High School and Statesboro High School celebrated the end of their high school years and the beginning of their postgraduate lives.

Oh, the places they'll go

Ogeechee Technical College handed out more than 1,000 degrees, diplomas, certificates and GED diplomas to more than 350 students during its commencement Thursday at Hanner Fieldhouse on Georgia Southern University's campus. Heather Abbott, a survivor of the Boston Marathon bombing and a certified peer counselor with the Amputee Coalition of America, was the keynote speaker.
