Residents say no to discharge permit

SPRINGFIELD - The message was clear Tuesday night as people interested in the Ogeechee River demanded that Environmental Protection Division officials not issue a discharge permit to a textiles plant many have blamed for two fish kills within the past year. The first occurred in May 2011, killing tens of thousands of fish. A year later, dozens were found dead on Memorial Day.

Fish kill cause ‘may never be known’

Georgia Environmental Protection Division officials still say the cause of a recent fish kill in the Ogeechee River likely is drought conditions, but they have not clarified the difference between conditions upriver and downriver from a textiles plant suspected by some to have been a contributing factor.
