Kim cites Adenhart as inspiration

AUGUSTA - With his mind firmly wrapped around the 'what ifs' surrounding the tragic death of 22-year-old Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim pitcher Nick Adenhart, Anthony Kim made history Friday at the Masters. The 23-year-old Kim recorded 11 birdies during his round, breaking the course record set by Nick Price in 1986.

Handel to speak at OTC’s ’09 graduation ceremony

Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel will deliver the keynote address at Ogeechee Technical College's 2009 Commencement Exercises on May 14, said OTC president Dr. Dawn Cartee. Ogeechee Tech's graduation ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. at Georgia Southern University's Hanner Fieldhouse.

Angels rookie Adenhart killed in car crash

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart and two other people were killed Thursday by a suspected drunk driver just hours after the rookie made his first start of the season.

The Angels postponed Thursday night's game with Oakland and players planned to gather to remember their teammate, manager Mike Scioscia said.

FBI joins effort in hostage standoff with pirates

NAIROBI, Kenya - FBI hostage negotiators joined U.S. Navy efforts Thursday to free an American cargo ship captain held captive on a lifeboat by Somali pirates. A U.S. destroyer and a spy plane kept a close watch in the high-seas standoff near the Horn of Africa, and more U.S. ships were dispatched to the area.

The pirates tried to hijack the U.S.-flagged Maersk Alabama on Wednesday, but Capt. Richard Phillips thwarted their takeover by telling his crew of about 20 to lock themselves in a room, the crew told stateside relatives.

Wells Fargo earnings surprise sends market higher

NEW YORK - Stocks bounded higher Thursday after banking giant Wells Fargo & Co. surprised the market with an early profit report that blew past analysts' expectations thanks to a strong pickup in its lending business.

Investors have been grasping at any sign of improvement in the crippled banking industry, and Wells Fargo's report Thursday that it expects first-quarter earnings of $3 billion provided an encouraging sign that a deep freeze in borrowing activity may finally be thawing. Wells Fargo said it benefited from its January acquisition of Wachovia and an increase in mortgage applications.

Obama to seek $83.4 billion for Iraq, Afghan wars

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is seeking $83.4 billion for U.S. military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, pressing for a war supplemental spending bill like the ones he sometimes opposed when he was senator and George W. Bush was president.

Obama's request, including money to increase U.S. troops in Afghanistan, would push the costs of the two wars to almost $1 trillion since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, according to the Congressional Research Service. The additional money would cover operations into the fall.
