Second grade was the year I asked for and got a stuffed French poodle for Christmas. I named her Fifi. She had thick wire in her legs and could stand on my dresser by herself. It was the year that Mama made me a pink pin-wale corduroy dress for the Valentine's Day party at school. It had a Peter Pan collar and a high yoke with tiny pearl buttons down the front. It was the year that I added to my vocabulary the words college, scholarship and author and decided that those words were mine.

Couple celebrates 50 years

Carlene Franklin Johnson and John Roy Johnson celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 3. They were married on June 3, 1967, at the Statesboro Primitive Church with Bro. T. Roe Scott officiating. Roy and Carlene have two sons, Chris (Debbie) Johnson and Mitch (Denice) Johnson. They also have two grandsons, Luke and Jake Johnson; and three step-grandchildren, Taylor, Josh and Michaela Moody. They reside in Portal.

Parenting Advice with John Rosemond: A little 'Vitamin N' can go a long way

I call it "Vitamin N." It is the word children need to hear most, but it is currently the word children hear least. It is arguably the most character-building word in the English language, but then helping children achieve great things (or creating the illusion that they are achieving great things) has eclipsed helping children build strong character. That is unfortunate indeed because high achievement alone does not produce solid character, but a person with solid character will always do his or her best.
