EPA replacing Bush smog limit with stricter rule

WASHINGTON - The Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday proposed stricter health standards for smog, replacing a Bush-era limit that ran counter to scientific recommendations.

The new limits - which are presented as a range - will likely put hundreds more counties nationwide in violation, a designation that will require them to find additional ways to clamp down on pollution or face government sanctions, most likely the loss of federal highway dollars.

Study: Calorie counts off at chains, frozen meals

A new study says food at popular chain restaurants and in the frozen food aisles can be more fattening than advertised.

A study of meals from 10 restaurant chains including Ruby Tuesday and Wendy's found calorie counts averaging 18 percent more than the values listed by the restaurants.

Unemployment-claims data signal job gains are near

WASHINGTON - A government report Thursday on claims for unemployment aid signaled that layoffs are easing and that the U.S. economy could be on the verge of posting the first monthly gain in jobs in two years.

The number of people claiming unemployment benefits for the first time barely rose last week, after falling to its lowest level since July 2008 the previous week. And the four-week average of claims fell for the 18th straight week to 450,250. That figure has reached its lowest point since September 2008, when the financial crisis intensified with the collapse of Lehman Brothers.
