DEAR DR. GOTT: I'm a 53-year-old man, 6 feet 2 inches tall and 200 pounds. My waist is 33 inches, and I am built like an athlete. I have never smoked, bike 20 to 40 miles a day, usually doing the first 20 in an hour. I swim both in the ocean and the pool, lift light weights and surf occasionally. I also work in the construction field and do manual labor to keep in shape, even though I am the architect and builder of each project. Having said that, I have been to hell and back, surviving cancer.
DEAR ABBY: This is in response to "Young Mom in Oklahoma" (May 7), who wrote asking if it was OK to discipline her 4-year-old by smashing his toys with a hammer. Your response was appropriate. However, that mother should be encouraged to attend parenting classes or speak to her son's pediatrician regarding her problem with how to discipline her son. I am very concerned for the child's well-being if she even has to ask if it's OK to smash his toys with a hammer. - A MOM WHO CARES
LONDON - ''Those who cure you are going to kill you.''
PANORAMA CITY, Calif. - The federal government will spend more than $1 billion this year on nutrition education - fresh carrot and celery snacks, videos of dancing fruit, hundreds of hours of lively lessons about how great you will feel if you eat well.
PHILADELPHIA - Merit pay tied to student test scores seems all the rage in some educational circles, but many teachers think it's an idea whose time hasn't come.
ATLANTA - Chris Benoit's mother said she wonders whether her son would still be alive if federal agents had been more aggressive when they discovered the professional wrestler was buying large quantities of steroids.

Do not allow yourself to get discouraged if an endeavor in which you're involved does not get off to an auspicious start. Tenacity will reap the rewards you are seeking.
DEAR ABBY: I am a former junior high and high school teacher. I do not agree with your advice to "Deflowered in Pennsylvania" (May 2), the 28-year-old who made some "poor choices" as a teenager and is no longer a virgin. She is dating "Chris," a 26-year-old man who is saving himself for marriage and wants to marry a virgin. You told her that because Chris needs time to think about this discrepancy, she should move on.
DEAR DR. GOTT: My question concerns my 34-year-old son. He does not smoke or drink and is in excellent health. However, he recently had pains on his right side, and they got so bad he went to the emergency room. He was admitted to the hospital for three days. All kinds of tests were performed, and finally a CT scan detected multiple blood clots in his right lung. He is now on Coumadin, under the care of his family doctor and nearly back to normal.

It behooves you to establish good relationships with persons both in your social and work world. The more persons you know, the greater your chances will be for furthering your aims in life.
DEAR DR. GOTT: I feel sorry for you. Doesn't your wife (if you even have one) make homemade banana bread? The ingredients include flour, and it is delicious. Does your wife know how to bake? I bet you won't print this letter.
The lines on the sailboats in the boatyard keen in the wind, cats meowing mournfully at some imagined wrong. The tide is low, the water nearly flat. In the not too distance, a shrimp boat's silhouette cuts the gray landscape with edges as sharp as a knife blade. It is not exactly too cold for a long walk, but I am ill-prepared; the coat is warm enough, the shoes sturdy enough, but without gloves or a scarf, my hands, my face, my ears will be gnawed raw in minutes.
God has a lot to say about money in the Bible - in fact, more than almost any other single topic. He cares about the attitudes we have about it and how we use it. Money is necessary; yet there is so much corruption connected with the desire for money.

Winter weather threw a wrench into Statesboro High's Boots in the Boro soccer tournament, but at least some of the games will go on.
