I used to have fall foliage envy until I realized that "leaf peeping" season for our northern neighbors signaled the end of their gardening year. Along the southeastern coastal plain, our fall foliage display may not be as spectacular (and actually comes later in the season) but fall also brings with it some of the most colorful flowers of the year and another wonderful season of gardening.
Everyone in Statesboro knows what an important role United States Highway 301 has played in the growth of Bulloch County over the last 80 years. Begun in 1926, 301 was originally designed and intended to be part of U.S. Highway 17, and a spur of U.S. Highway 1. To the north of Bulloch County, 301 bore the name of "Burton's Ferry Road," and throughout the Mid-Atlantic region was known as "The Tobacco Trail."
Reminders of the changing season are all around us. It is time to begin a decorating transition in our homes. We can start at our entries, both front and back. Just as a garland of greenery can be draped around our doors at Christmas time, the same idea can be used with sticks, twigs, and grapevine for the fall season. Live or silk greenery and leaves in fall colors of oranges, browns, and burgundies can be intertwined among your twig garland. Strands of berries are an effective way to add color across your garland.
Popular evangelist Chuck Swindoll was speaking on the theme of grace and its relationship to God's will on his radio program "Insight for Livin.," He was looking at material from Paul's letter to the churches of Galatia, and among his textual references for the day was this sobering one from chapter 1:
I noticed it, what at first appeared to be a matted, wadded up piece of spider web, as I started down the back steps. It was hanging from the dryer vent moving just slightly in the breeze. As I reached to pull it away I realized that it was a fragment of leaf attached to a thin twig attached to a larger twig stuffed inside the vent, not just dangling on the edge.

Courtesy of my friend and parent coach Janet Neal (www.ourchildishways.com) comes an interesting story: The parents of a 4-year-old girl went to a preschool parent conference to learn from her teacher that she is having difficulty with scissors and somewhat behind the other kids in letter and number recognition. The parents apparently blew the teacher's mind when they replied that they were more concerned with their daughter's heart and character than her academic achievement. Was she compassionate? Was she respectful of her teachers and peers?
