Brief first council meeting for interim city manager

Chris Addleton

The first taste of Statesboro city government was brief for new interim city manager Chris Addleton when Tuesday morning's regular city council meeting was postponed due to lack of a quorum.
With Council Member Gary Lewis recovering after cancer surgery last week, Travis Chance out sick and Mayor Bill Hatcher attending a funeral, there were not enough bodies to conduct official business.
The council meeting was tentatively rescheduled for Friday morning at 9.
Addleton comes to Statesboro with more than 25 years in management, mostly in private industry. For 23 years, he worked for Torrington Bearing, his final eight years as plant manager. When the company wanted to move him out of state and uproot his two high school-aged children, he decided to make a career move, taking the city manager position with the city of Cairo.
Addleton is excited about the opportunity to work as interim manager
"This will be a good learning experience for me," said Addleton. "Statesboro is a great city. It's vibrant and growing. I look forward to working here."
The city council decided to hire an interim manager while they conduct a nation-wide search for a long-term manager to replace George Wood, who accepted a manager job in North Carolina after seven years in Statesboro. At the last meeting, the council voted to hire the executive search firm Slavin & Associates to fill the position of city manager. Primarily, the council chose Slavin because they were a Georgia firm with local ties to Statesboro.
Addleton said city officials hope to have a search complete within three to four months. This gives the new manager the opportunity to move over the summer, making the transition easier for potential candidates with school-aged children.
