Police arrested three teenagers Saturday after responding to a report of a "device" exploding inside a North Main Street restaurant.
Just before 8 p.m. Saturday, several Statesboro Police officers responded to the call and questioned witnesses who said four teenage males "fled the scene after the device exploded," Statesboro Police Capt. L. C. Williams said.
The "explosive device" was only a plastic container filled with drain cleaner and other substances, he said, but could have caused injury had anyone been close to it when it exploded.
Often the homemade devices are used as "jokes, but someone could have been seriously injured," he said. "They're lucky someone did not get injured."
As Sgt. Kaleb Moore, Sgt. Erk McCurdy, Cpl. Randall Powell, Advanced Patrol Officer Hugh Gordon and Officer Brian Jackson headed to the scene, Bulloch County 911 dispatchers informed them the suspects were seen walking towards Dairy Queen, which is a couple blocks away from KFC, Williams said.
"The suspects were shortly located by Cpl. Powell and Officer Jackson, who placed them under arrest," he said.
Only three of the four suspects were captured, he said. Kelsey Deval Moore, 17, Groover Lane, and two teenage juvenile males, ages 15 and 16, were taken into custody and charged with  aggravated assault, possession of a destructive device, possession of tools for  the commission of a crime, and participating in criminal street gang activity.
Investigation by Det. Kelphie Lundy resulted in Moore also being charged with false statements and writing, he said.
Moore was taken to the Bulloch County Jail where he awaits bond, Williams said. The two juveniles arrested were transported to Claxton Regional Youth Detention Center, and investigators are searching for the fourth suspect, he said.
