Newly-elected Statesboro City Councilman Travis Chance sworn in Thursday

Text Size: Small Large Medium
Newly-elected Statesboro City Councilman Travis Chance sat with the audience Thursday morning as the council meeting began, but after a brief swearing-in ceremony, he joined the other councilmen on the dias with a smile.
“It’s a relief,” he said during a recess where citizens greeted him and two other councilmen who were also sworn in by Bulloch County Probate Judge Lee Deloach. Councilmen Will Britt, District 3, and Gary Lewis, District 2,  were reelected to their seats in November.
Chance, who overpowered incumbent John Morris in the race for the District 5 seat, said he was glad the controversy surrounding the election was over. The election results were delayed due to contested voter registration.
“Now we can ... move on and get some things accomplished, and get Statesboro moving in the right direction,” he said.
Chance’s girlfriend Shannon Edwards, who served as his campaign manager, held the Bible while Chance placed his left hand upon it, raised his right hand and was sworn into office.
After the recess, the city council went back into session and addressed other business including awarding a bid for personal fire protective equipment for the Statesboro Fire Department; a change order for the Westside Sewer Interceptor Project and addressing zoning requests.
