SEB named top achieving school

State Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox recently named Southeast Bulloch High School a Georgia School of Excellence in Student Achievement – one of 23 schools statewide to receive the award.
Each year, the Georgia Department of Education identifies one school from each congressional district in each of two categories: top 10 percent and greatest gains. SEB was given the award for greatest gains, meaning they have improved their achievement scores, for the past three years, as measured by assessments in reading and mathematics.
SEB Principal Joni Walker-Seier was, needless to say, more than pleased with the news.
“Isn’t that wonderful?” she said. “I’m very proud of our faculty, our staff and our students, as well as the parents in the community. It takes all of these folks to make a school of excellence.”
Bulloch County Superintendent Lewis Holloway also expressed his pleasure with the announcement.
“We’re very excited about the performance of the students at SEB and the good job the teachers are doing,” said Holloway. “We commend them for their efforts. It’s quite an award.”
Walker-Seier told how she informed the students of the award.
“I got on the loudspeaker, just after the state press release went out, and told the students how prestigious it is to be a school of excellence,” said Walker-Seier. “After all only 23 are selected.”
Schools are only eligible for the award once every five years. SEB last won the award in 2000.
Holloway said this is a step in the right direction for SEB.
“It’s a big shot in the arm for them, too. They’ve got a new facility and there’s a lot of really positive things going on for them right now.”
