Burke no match for rampaging Gators

WAYNESBORO – Bulloch Academy scored on its very first play from scrimmage and never looked back as the Gators dominated GISA Region 2-AA foe Edmund Burke Academy 42-0 here Friday night.

Bulloch (6-1 overall and 1-0 in region play) rolled up 392 yards of total offense while limiting the Spartans (0-6, 0-1) to just 23 yards.

"We really got after it," said Gator head football coach Clint Morgan. "The guys knew that this was the game that we lost last year which kept us out of the playoffs. So, the revenge factor was on our side."

Bulloch scored 21 points in the first quarter and 14 in the second for an overwhelming 35-0 halftime lead. The contest was played with a running clock in the second half.

Senior wingback Ethan Lovett started off the first-half scoring frenzy on BA's very first play.

He and quarterback Jordan Walker turned the corner on a perfectly-executed option and the Gator QB flipped the ball to Lovett, who dashed 79 yards for the score with 11:40 left in the first quarter.

"It was executed very well," said Morgan. "There was great blocking on the perimeter."

Lovett wound up with 151 yards rushing on the night and also caught a three-yard touchdown pass.

"Ethan came out and played really, really solid on both offense and defense," said Morgan. "He's a senior and he knows what's at stake."

BA scored on its third possession of the night. After forcing EBA to punt deep in its own territory, Lovett had an 11-yard return to the Spartan 29. Two plays later, Walker hooked up with wide receiver Darion Carter for the score at the 5:35 mark.

"When your running game is working well, it's going to open up the pass," said Morgan.

Walker was 4-of-9 for 91 yards and three scores. Carter caught two passes for 74 yards while Lovett the other two catches for 17 yards.

Fullback Matthew Sapp, subbing for the injured David Poole, got into the action next.

Late in the quarter, Carter recovered an EBA fumble at the Spartan 11. On the next play, the sophomore blasted through the line for the score with 4:57 left. Will Powell's PAT gave the Gators a 21-0 lead.

Bulloch's defense stymied the Spartans all night, but especially in the first quarter as EBA had minus 19 yards rushing.

"Our defense played extremely well," said Morgan. "Our front four of Michael Kimbrell, Drew Cheshire, Ben Newton and Corey Owens stayed in their backfield."

Early in the second quarter, Walker hit Lovett on the three-yard touchdown toss and then, on a fourth-and-one late in the quarter, connected with Carter on a 45-yard pass over the middle for the 35-0 halftime lead.

The football 'mercy rule' of a running clock was enacted in the second half and Morgan used the big lead to substitute freely.

In the fourth quarter, back-up quarterback Brandon Walker engineered a 13-play drive which ended in the Gators' final points of the night. Troy Poulin muscled in from four yards with 4:40 left in the game.

"I was very proud of my 'next group,'" said Morgan. "It was a great chance for them to get that experience and will definitely lead to future successes."

In the drive, Walker, wingbacks Poulin and Ellis Lane and fullback Kelly Williams, as well as several new linemen, got some valuable playing time.

Bulloch Academy hits the road again next week, traveling to Chula near Tifton to face non-region foe Tiftarea Academy.
