Local Roundup: Bulloch native wins golf tourney

    BATON ROUGE, La. — Bulloch County native Wendel Akins birdied the last four holes of the 36-hole Baton Rouge Open golf tournament on Sunday to finish 10-under in the event for the win, the New Orleans Advocate reported.
    Akins edged Brandt Garon, the 2013 champion at the tournament, by two strokes.
    Garon’s 67 was the low round of the day. Akins’ winning total of 10-under was the tournament’s lowest in at least the last 15 years, according to tournament officials.
   
22 Eagles make SoCon honor roll
    Twenty-two Georgia Southern football players were named to the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll for the 2013-14 academic year.
    The student-athletes recorded a 3.0 grade point average or higher with a minimum of 24 hours of credit hours passed. Eight of those Eagles were honored with the Commissioner’s Medal for attaining a GPA of 3.5 or higher throughout the year. 

'Bash in the Boro' football camp
    The final Georgia Southern Eagle Football Camp, “Bash in the Boro” is set for Friday, July 18 at Paulson Stadium with check in beginning at 11 a.m.
    The camp session, directed by GSU coach Willie Fritz and the Eagle coaching staff, runs from 12:30-3:30 p.m.
    The camp is open to rising ninth-12th graders and the cost is $40 per camper, which includes an evaluation and a T-shirt. The “Bash in the Boro” Football camp is open to any and all entrants limited only by number, age, grade level and/or gender.
