Georgia Southern football player Kentrellis Marquis Showers, and a woman, Jomeshia Jquana Slaughter, were arrested at their Cambridge Pines apartment early Saturday morning after Statesboro police responded to a call about a verbal altercation that turned physical, according to an incident report.
Slaughter, 22, was charged with battery and Showers, 23, was charged with simple battery. Both charges are misdemeanors.
Under Georgia code, battery occurs when a person “intentionally causes substantial physical harm or visible bodily harm to another.”
Simple battery, a lesser charge, occurs when a person “intentionally makes physical contact of an insulting or provoking nature with the person of another; or intentionally causes physical harm to another.”
Both suspects were named as the “primary aggressors” in the police report.
Showers, a rising senior on the GSU football team, is a wide receiver who has played in 39 games for the Eagles. He has 29 catches for 450 yards in his career. His six touchdown receptions put Showers fourth all time in Georgia Southern history.

Herald staff writer Holli Deal Saxon contributed to this report.
