Stubbs to remain in jail pending hearings, trial

Bond denied in shooting death

Bond denied in shooting death

James Jeffrey Stubbs

A man charged with murder will have to remain in jail after Bulloch County Superior Court Judge F. Gates Peed denied him bond.
James Jeffrey Stubbs, 52, of B. Stubbs Road, was arrested for felony murder after shooting Keith Wesley Brannen, 43, of Plantation Mobile Home Park in April, according to Bulloch County Sheriff Lynn Anderson.
Brannen was at Stubbs’ home when an argument occurred, and Stubbs reportedly shot him in the head. Brannen died days afterward in a Savannah hospital, the sheriff has said.
The victim’s brother Ricky Brannen told the Statesboro Herald the victim suffered severe injuries after a shotgun blast to the top of his head. He said his brother showed improvement after initial surgeries by moving his feet and crying, but then his condition worsened and he died.
Stubbs, originally charged with aggravated assault, remained without bond in the Bulloch County Jail, where he has been incarcerated since the shooting. Charges were upgraded to murder after Brannen’s death.
Sheriff’s patrol deputies were dispatched to Stubbs’ residence at 9:45 p.m. April 22, where they found Brannen on the ground with a gunshot wound. Stubbs was found inside the home and taken into custody. Investigators questioned witnesses who were at the scene when the shooting occurred, including a juvenile.
Stubbs has a lengthy history of arrests in Bulloch and other counties, according to Bulloch County Jail records. While many records are sealed by the state because of recent privacy law changes, public record shows Stubbs was arrested several times on battery charges, including incidents in November 1999 and January 2002.
Stubbs will remain incarcerated in the Bulloch County Jail until further court hearings, including a possible trial. Bulloch County Clerk of Courts Heather Banks McNeal said Friday no dates have yet been set for Stubbs’ next court appearance. The bond hearing took place June 4.
