Why do we even need a court system?

Editor:
Recently a fine man was arrested for a misdemeanor. He was a principal of the largest school in Bulloch County. He must have really applied himself to become qualified for that position. I know him to be an upstanding citizen in our community, a committed Christian and an outstanding example for our young people.
Everyone who keeps up with the news has seen him arrested; his name and picture have been blazoned by the media. Then we hear his contract has not been renewed for September!
For those who don’t know him, he has been arrested, found guilty and sentenced – all without a trial – and most might think he is guilty. I don’t believe it.
I don’t know the facts. I haven’t heard his side of the story. Was he guilty? Was he carrying out orders from his superiors? In his judgment was he trying to protect the reputation of the school and made a mistake? We don’t know, and we might never know.
This I do know. His reputation has been tarnished. He has lost the livelihood to provide for his family in the field he chose for a career. The years of hard work to have reached his position have gone down the drain.
For those responsible, I only ask one question: “How would you feel if this were you?”
Sincerely,
Betty W. O’Berry
