Former radio personality charged in Millen standoff

A Millen man and former Statesboro-area radio personality remained behind bars Friday after a four-hour standoff Thursday during which police said he held his wife at gunpoint in their home.

Nearby schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution while Rick Pittman, 57, of Bay Street, remained barricaded in his house as Georgia State Patrol SWAT officers and other law enforcement agents stood by, Millen Police Chief Dwayne Herrington said.

Pittman and his wife, Linda Pittman, reportedly had a domestic argument when Rick Pittman allegedly pulled a handgun and held her against her will, Herrington said.
No one was injured, but as a safety measure, schools were locked down until it was time for students to be released. At dismissal time, buses were routed to the front of the school, where parents also picked up students, Herrington said.

Millen police attempted to negotiate with Pittman, but called for assistance from the SWAT officers when he did not immediately cooperate. He turned himself in around 6 p.m., Herrington said.

Pittman was once part of a Statesboro-area radio personality team, "Rick and Ray in the Morning," with Ray Classens, Herrington confirmed. The radio show has been off the air for several years. Classens was not immediately available for comment Friday.

Pittman is being held in the Jenkins County Jail awaiting bond and other hearings, charged with aggravated assault (family violence), false imprisonment and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to jail records. He was arrested by Millen police. The Jenkins County Sheriff's Office also responded to the scene.
