Local Roundup: Willoughby to be introduced as next Portal coach

PORTAL — Jon Willoughby will be introduced as the next head football coach of the Portal Panthers at a news conference Wednesday at 1 p.m.
Willoughby comes to Portal from Southeast Bulloch, where he coached the quarterbacks and outside linebackers on coach Pat Collins' staff.
Willoughby takes over for David NeSmith, who resigned from Portal to become the offensive coordinator at Bradwell Institute.
Under NeSmith, the Panthers went 10-19-1 in three years, including a 3-3 record in Region 3-A in 2013.

Blue Devils swept, eliminated
CARROLLTON — The Statesboro Blue Devils ran out of gas in the quarterfinals of the GHSA Class AAAA state playoffs, getting swept by Carrollton on the road 5-2 and 7-3 to put to bed a season that included a 23-8 overall record and a regular season subregion championship.
In game two, Jackson Ware's RBI single in the third inning drove in Clay Reed and put the Blue Devils ahead 3-2, but Carrollton struck for four runs in the fifth, including a three-run home run by Will Hesterlee.
The teams traced punches in the early going, battling to a 2-2 tie that included a solo homer by Connor Akins in the first.
Carrolton's John Jaiter hit a two-run bomb in the four-run third inning in game one that the Blue Devils never recovered from.
