SEB track gets clean sweep at region meet

The Southeast Bulloch boys and girls ...

Southeast Bulloch's senior girls made it a career sweep, winning a fourth consecutive region championship at the Region 1-AAA track and field meet Tuesday in Brooklet.
The Lady Yellow Jackets dominated the competition, netting 160 points in cruising to a 48-point victory.
"It's a great feeling to win region," SEB coach Jolie Britt said. "With teams like New Hampstead and Johnson in the hunt, we knew that we had a lot of competition. I'm proud of how we really showed up."
Winning region titles might be the norm for the Lady Jackets, but it was a new thrill for the SEB boys.
Always competitive, but lacking key points in certain events over the last few years, the boys stormed out to a commanding lead through Monday's field events.
On Tuesday, the Jackets battled hard in the running events and managed a 13-point victory over second place Appling County to claim their first region championship in a decade.
"We knew that the guys would do well in the field like they have all year," Britt said. "I think that such a good first day really gave them a boost and they rode the adrenaline through today."
Senior Preston Smith was a driving force in the Jackets' win, taking first place in the high jump, long jump, and triple jump. After all events concluded Tuesday, Smith stood alone as the individual high point winner for the boys' competition.
In all, the Yellow Jackets will be sending 24 of their athletes to the April 26 sectionals at East Jackson.
Top qualifiers in that meet will advance to the Class AAA state championships.
"It's incredible to be able to send so many to compete at sectionals," Britt said. "And it's not just that so many qualified. A lot of our guys and girls qualified for multiple events. That's huge when you think about it from the team perspective."
Big thinking is certainly what the Lady Jackets are all about these days. With a few seniors now sporting four region championship trophies and plenty of sectional qulifiers being no stranger to postseason competition, it seems like there is only one logical 'next step' to take.
"I know that we're thinking about state," Britt said. "That's a huge goal, but I know that's what our girls want to achieve."
