No one was injured during a fight involving gunfire Sunday afternoon in a busy parking lot, but police arrested two men they say were involved.

Police aren't revealing the reason for a fight between two men in Statesboro's Walmart parking lot, but Statesboro police Cpl. Justin Samples said rumors that the scuffle was over a parking space are untrue.

Around 2:15 p.m. Sunday, police were called to the scene after reports that people were fighting outside the store. Officers arrived and identified Hunter Mark Rush, 18, of Georgia Highway 129 in Metter, and Francisco Javier Chavez, 22, of Amelia Road in Claxton, as the two suspects involved.

The heated argument quickly became physical, and a vehicle was damaged during the fight, Samples said.
"During the altercation, Rush retrieved a rifle from his vehicle and fired into the air," Samples said.

Officers secured the area and the firearm and, after further investigation, both Rush and Chavez were placed under arrest, Samples said.

Rush was charged with discharging a firearm within city limits, pointing a firearm at another, affray, criminal trespass and reckless conduct.

Chavez was booked on charges of affray and criminal trespass.

Both were taken to the Bulloch County Jail, where they await bond hearings, according to jail records.

Anyone with information concerning this case is asked to contact Detective Sgt. Patrick Harrelson at the Statesboro Police Department at (912) 764-9911.
