Spring election season is just about here.

The primary is May 20. That means the deadline for residents to register is April 21 — just eight days from now.

There are plenty of races for Bulloch County voters.

Locally, voters have a choice in for clerk of court (nonpartisan), two county commission seats (one in the Republican primary and one in the Democratic primary) and two school board posts (nonpartisan).

Statewide, there are races for governor (Republican primary is contested) and U.S. Senate (contested both in Republican and Democratic primaries). The 12th Congressional District has a contested Republican primary.

A federal judge ruled last year that Georgia needed to allow more time for overseas and military ballots to be received in the event of a runoff in federal elections, and the state Legislature passed a law earlier this year making the early dates apply to state and local elections.

Besides the earlier primary, there is a new way to register to vote. Any state resident with a valid Georgia driver’s license can register online at

And a new “My Voter Page” app, available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store by searching “GA Votes,” also can be used to register or check your status.

“Every Georgian should have the opportunity to vote in the May 20 Primary Election,” Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp said. “The good news is that it is easier than ever to get registered to vote or to change your registration information.”

Advance voting begins April 28, just one week after the registration deadline.

Should a runoff be needed in any race, it will be held July 22.

And the general election — when the winners of the party primaries face each other — is set for Nov. 4.
