Georgia Southern University will "Candy Crush Cancer" Friday night as the second annual university Relay for Life gets underway at Erk Russell Park.

"This is our second year at Erk Russell Park," said Robin Peeples, American Cancer Society specialist with the Bulloch County chapter. "We raised $37,000 last year, and our goal this year is $35,500."

There are 39 teams participating, and through pre-Relay efforts they have raised money through "lots of give-back nights at Moe's Southwest Grill, Buffalo Wild Wings and off-campus events," she said.

Some teams will hold a "light up Greek Row" event Sunday night and have already raised $500 through sales of "Greek life" luminaries, she said.

There will be all kinds of entertainment, Peeples said, with music and activities including a scavenger hunt and an "all student" run.

Playing on the name of a popular online game, "‘Candy Crush Cancer' is the theme," she said.

Vendors will sell food such as hot dogs, hamburgers and popcorn, and the public is invited to participate in games and activities such as "bra pong," in which people try to toss a ball into a brassiere cup, she said.

The event takes place from 7 p.m. to midnight,, beginning with U.S. Rep. John Barrow, D-Ga., speaking. Erk Russell Athletic Park encompasses Paulson Stadium, Bishop Field House and the soon-to-be-completed Football Operations Center.

Other activities include the Survivors Lap, in which cancer survivors take the first lap around the track while upbeat music plays; the Luminaria Ceremony, a time to remember people who have died from cancer and to support those battling the disease; and a closing ceremony, which includes a commitment to continue to fight cancer for the next year.

"We would encourage the GSU administration and staff to participate and hope the community comes out to show support," she said.
