Sons of Confederate Veterans to observe heritage month

Ogeechee Rifles Camp #941, Sons of Confederate Veterans, plans to observe Confederate Heritage and History Month throughout April.

The highlight will be a memorial service to be held at the Confederate Monument on the Bulloch County Courthouse grounds. The service is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Elder Keith Hamilton of Upper Black Creek Primitive Baptist Church will deliver the keynote address. Hamilton is the author of "Those Grey Rebels at Upper Black Creek Church" a 268-page roster of the 35-plus Confederate veterans buried in the church cemetery near Brooklet.

Re-enactors in full Confederate uniforms and weaponry will be there to fire a 21-gun black-powder salute to the memory of the hundreds from Bulloch County who marched off to battle in 1861. At the conclusion, Sons of Confederate Veterans members and others who would like to participate will retire to Eastside Cemetery to place battle flags on the graves of almost 40 identified burial locations of Confederate veterans there.

Gov. Nathan Deal has proclaimed April as Confederate Heritage and History Month.

The Ogeechee Rifles Camp kicked off the month Tuesday by placing memorial wreaths and flags on the Confederate Monument.

Throughout the month, the camp will place battle flags on the graves of Confederate veterans interred in cemeteries and burial grounds throughout Bulloch County. Anyone who is a descendent of a Confederate veteran or who wants to learn more about how the Civil War affected the civilian population of Bulloch and surrounding counties is encouraged to volunteer to assist the group to place the flags.
