Statesboro Police arrested a couple Friday after finding an infant "filthy and incoherent" inside an untidy home.

Statesboro Police Chief Stan York said Advanced Patrol Officers Richard Beckum, Steve Gravely and Justin Gawthrop responded to a reported domestic disturbance at a St. Charles Place apartment Friday and found Christopher Daniel Atkins, 19, Anna Nicole Jones, 21, and a  two-month-old female infant in an apartment that was "filthy and in complete disarray."

Jones had "fresh injuries to her face and right arm," he said. "The infant was observed to be filthy and incoherent."

Officers contacted the Bulloch County Department of Family and Children Services as well as Det. Kelphie Lundy. DFCS social workers took protective custody of the child and transported her to East Georgia Regional Medical Center for "evaluation and treatment,"  he said.

Lundy arrested Atkins on charges of battery (Domestic Violence Act violation), third degree cruelty to children, first degree cruelty to children, obstruction of officers and also charges of being wanted on other outstanding warrants, York said.

Jones was charged with cruelty to children and arrested as well, he said.

Both were transported to the Bulloch County Jail where they remained Friday evening without bond, according to jail records.
