Fun with Family with Julie Lavender - Make March a green month of merriment

Julie Lavender

Enjoy the month of everything green with lots of fun and merriment. Eat green eggs and ham, broccoli, green beans and kale. Add a slice of lime to your water glass, and dip zucchini in ranch dressing for a snack. Wear every shade of green imaginable, and look for those same beautiful hues of green on every shrub, tree and bush as plants come back to life in the promise of springtime. Celebrate all things green and many more holidays this month. Check out a few of these wild ones for more fun.
Dr. Seuss’ Birthday — Celebrate the famous children’s author Theodor Seuss Geisel this month by reading at least one of his books every few days. He has, after all, written 44 children’s books from which to choose. When you come to the book “And to Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street” on his list of accomplishments, point out to your listeners that Geisel submitted that manuscript 27 times to publishers before it was accepted. How’s that for persistence? Talk about something your family wants to accomplish that will require some persistence, and get moving on it!
Pyramid Day — Take an online virtual tour of famous pyramids around the world. Did you know that more than 2 million stone blocks were used to build the Great Pyramid of Khufu? Use a homemade or store-purchased dough to create unique pyramid structures to celebrate the day.
National Potato Chip Day — Pick a day close to St. Patrick’s Day and celebrate both holidays with a yummy spinach dip, served with baked or low-fat chips. Mix together 1 10-ounce package of chopped baby spinach (drained), 1 16-ounce container of sour cream, 1 cup of mayonnaise and 1 package of Knorr Vegetable recipe mix. Chill before serving.
Submarine Day — Round up the family for a challenging 20-questions-type game of Everything Down Under. Choose a theme, like under the water, under the ground, under the bathroom sink or some other creative “under” topic. One person chooses an item from the theme and gives one clue to its solution. Players then ask yes or no questions to try to guess the selection. Collect points to see who can guess the most “down under” things!
Spring — With the erratic behavior of Mother Nature recently, one can’t begin to guess if springtime will show up appropriately, but according to the calendar, this lovely season makes its appearance on March 20. Prompt the season with a little crafting fun. In honor of Shoe Week, also in March, have the kids trace the outline of a sneaker onto yellow construction paper. Cut out about a dozen yellow shoe-shapes to create sun rays, then paint a paper plate yellow to make the body of the sun. When the paint is dry, staple or glue the shoe-shaped rays around the sun. Hang the craft near a window to invite an early, sunny springtime!
Take the month of March to enjoy family in the rain or on a train, with a goat or on a boat, in a house and even with a mouse. But no matter whether here or there, enjoy and love your family everywhere!
