Local Roundup: SEB opens track season with win


    BROOKLET — The Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets boys and girls won a four-team meet on Thursday at home.
    The boys (121 points) topped Savannah Christian (62), Jeff Davis (46) and Calvary Day (20)/ The girls (112) beat SCPS (72), JDHS (18 and CDS (15).
    First place finishers for the boys were Austin Weinkaff (3200), Justin Odum (discus), Nigil Smith (high jump, 110-meter hurdles), Preston Smith (triple jump), Ladarion Sambaka (400-meters), Mike Davis (100), Chris Perkins (300 hurdles), the 4x100-meter relay team of Antinio McMillan, Javarious Spaulding, Rodney Brazzell and Fonesca and the 4x400 team of Quinn Pitts, King Shatten, Smith and Fonesca.
    Second-place finishers were Pitts (3200), Andrew Stansell (shot put), Josh Woods (pole vault), Smith (high jump, long jump), Weinkaff (1600), and Spaulding (110 hurdles).
    First-place finishers for the girls were Naomi Cook (shot put, discus), Montana Cotton (high jump), Jasmine Roberts (long jump, triple jump), Laticia Fonesca (400), Lindsey Crosby (100 hurdles), Cierra Clark (300 hurdles) and the 4x100 realy team of Fonesca, Clark, Roberts and Nydrasha Horn.
    Second-place finishers were Destiny Burke (shot, discus), Becca Mackleprang (pole vault), Cotton (long jump), Roberts (100), Fonesca (200), Flott (800), and the 4x400 team of Fonesca, Clark, Roberts and Flott.

SHS JV tops Wayne county
    The Statesboro junior varsity Lady Dlue Devils defeated Wayne County 2-0 on Thursday at Womack Field.
    Flor Dajui scored the first SHS goal, and Sarah Gagel put the game away with a second-half penalty kick.
    Adrian Kittrell and Amanda Brown controlled the pace of the game from midfield.
    Statesboro (2-0) will visit Bradwell Institute on Monday.

Panthers fall to Tattnall
    REIDSVILLE — The Portal Panthers suffered their first loss of the season, falling 9-1 at Tattnall County on Thursday.
    Portal struck first, but the Warriors plated five unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth.
    Jake Brown and Parker Parrish each recorded a pair of hits.
    Evan Street allowed four runs through 3.1 innings, and Chase Kirkland allowed no earned runs in relief.
    Portal travels to Windsor Forest today at 6 p.m.

Gamecocks split with Effingham
    SYLVANIA — The Screven County Gamecocks were edged 3-2 by Effingham County in boys tennis, and the Lady Gamecocks won 4-1.
    The boys (1-2) were victorious in both doubles matches, with Ryan Bazemore and Zachary Weaver (6-2, 6-1) winning in straight sets and Zachary anderson and Matt Thomas (4-6, 6-3, 10-7) holding on.
    The Lady Gamecocks (3-0) got singles victories from Mallori Boswell (6-0, 6-0) and Jancy Durrence (6-2, 6-2).
    Doubles pair Pamela Wooten and Haley Jackson won 6-2, 6-1, and teammates Michaela Iwinski and Kristin Thomas battled for a 6-4, 1-6, 10-5 win.
    The Gamecocks begin region play on Tuesday against Westside.
