Statesboro Kiwanis members celebrated the civic club's 54th anniversary Thursday by honoring several, including member J.D. Dunn, who was named Kiwanian of the Year.

The banquet was held at the Kiwanis Ogeechee fairgrounds in the club's community room.

Selected by a committee of three past recipients of the award, the honor is bestowed upon a member who has shown dedication and involvement in club activities, and who has worked to make a difference in the club and community.

Dunn moved to Statesboro in 1987, retired from the Army, and after receiving Bachelor of Science and master's degrees in education, taught at Southeast Bulloch High School. Dunn is responsible for many of the structural improvements on the fairgrounds on Georgia Highway 67, and his hobbies include woodworking, reading and NASCAR races.

He was a Brooklet Kiwanis member before joining the Statesboro club. Dunn is a deacon at First Presbyterian Church and has helped build more than 340 homes in Bulloch County for Habitat for Humanity.

After a standing ovation, Dunn humbly accepted the award. Joking about the hazards of working on projects with other club members, he spoke about an incident where someone shot him with his own nail gun.

"I just want to thank everyone," he said.

The awards recognition banquet was completed by a humorous speech by Dr. Wayne Ates, a former Statesboro resident now living in Jesup. Actually, Ates spoke about the importance of having a sense of humor.

After a series of jokes that brought ripples of laughter, Ates stressed the importance of fun.

"I believe with all my heart it is important to have
a strong sense of humor," he said. "Laughter is a wonderful gift our Creator has given us."

People should learn to appreciate tasteful humor and take advantage of it, he said.

"Lighten up and enjoy life a little bit," Ates said. "When it's healthy and appropriate, let it rip."
