Last week’s epic win for Statesboro over Glynn Academy in overtime, in the driving rain, close to midnight was no doubt big for the Blue Devils (2-0, 1-0). Any chance for a let down tonight against Wayne County?
“Not one iota,” said coach Steve Pennington.
When the Blue Devils went back to work on Monday, they found a lacking effort individually and teamwise.
“Our film session Monday was worth two weeks of practice,” said Pennington. “It was a humbling experience for us as well as a learning experience. I look forward to seeing how our players respond to the challenges the coaches put to them this week.”
The good news for the Devils is that they won the game Friday against GA while realizing that there’s still a long way to go. They’ll face a Wayne County team (1-2, 1-1) that likes to spread it out, throwing about 80 percent of the time.
“That’s going to be a great challenge to us because we’re so young in the secondary,” said Pennington. “And we have not done a great job as far as pass rushing is concerned. And if we don’t do that it will put extra pressure on our secondary. So we’re eager to see how we’ll respond to that.”
The Jackets offense centers around running back Pat Smith.
Defensively, Wayne is strictly man-to-man, which means the Devils could once again open the passing game as they did last week.
Speaking of last week, how did Pennington enjoy the new overtime format designed by the GHSA?
“My first thought is special teams,” he said. “You do get a facet of all the game, just like the field goal came into play for them.
“But — you still miss a kickoff, or you miss a punt. A game involves those things. So that would be the only quirk I would have with it.”
    Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
